KUCHING – The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has credited its achievements in maintaining a clean, green and safe city to the values of unity and effective communication among its workforce.
Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng highlighted that MBKS’ long-standing tradition of celebrating major cultural and religious festivals, including Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Gawai, Christmas and Deepavali, reflects the council’s commitment to inclusivity and harmony.
Speaking at the Deepavali 2025 Celebration Ceremony on Tuesday, attended by councillors, division heads and staff, Dato Wee said such events are more than festive gatherings. They serve as platforms to strengthen relationships among employees, fostering a spirit of cooperation that underpins MBKS’ success.
“Celebrations like Deepavali remind us that light always overcomes darkness, and that truth and goodness will defeat fear and negativity. These values are not only important in personal life, but also in the workplace and community,” he remarked.
The Mayor stressed that team spirit and open communication are essential for effective service delivery. He urged staff to embrace dialogue, active listening and mutual support as part of their daily work culture. “A simple conversation can resolve many issues as well as strengthen understanding and team spirit,” he said.
Dato Wee also expressed appreciation to councillors and employees for their dedication in ensuring that Kuching South remains clean, green and welcoming. He emphasised that every action taken by MBKS staff reflects the council’s reputation, and therefore must be carried out with integrity and professionalism.
He further noted that unity, perseverance and integrity are the cornerstones of delivering quality public service. “Every action and attitude we take reflects the name of MBKS. Continue this spirit of service with full dedication so that we continue to shine for Kuching Selatan,” he concluded.
The Deepavali celebration, which featured cultural performances and traditional rituals, was attended by hundreds of staff and guests. It symbolised MBKS’ broader mission of promoting social cohesion and inclusivity, values that the council believes are vital in building a resilient and progressive city.
Dato Wee, who was recently reappointed as Mayor for a new term until 2028, has consistently emphasised unity, teamwork and communication as the guiding principles of MBKS’ governance.
Under his leadership, the council has continued to prioritise community engagement, environmental sustainability and cultural inclusivity as part of its service to the people of Kuching.
