Meradong Youth Embrace MyLesen Programme With Strong Participation

SARIKEI – The MyLesen programme in Meradong has received an overwhelming response, with 1,623 young people registering to obtain driving licences under the free assistance initiative. The turnout exceeded initial expectations, reflecting the growing demand for legal driving credentials among rural youth.

The programme was jointly organised by the Meradong Service Centre, the Road Transport Department (JPJ), and the Sarikei Driving Institute.

Many of the participants were recent Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) school leavers, eager to secure licences that would enhance both mobility and employment opportunities.

Meradong Assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing said the strong participation demonstrates the importance of accessible licensing schemes for young people.

He emphasised that the initiative not only helps participants obtain valid licences but also provides exposure to road safety practices, driving etiquette, and compliance with traffic laws.

“This programme opens doors for youth to obtain legal driving credentials while raising awareness on safety. It also equips participants with guidance to navigate the application process through official and secure channels provided by JPJ,” he explained.

The MyLesen initiative is part of broader efforts by the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Government to improve welfare in rural communities.

By expanding access to transportation-related services, the programme is expected to deliver long-term benefits for both individuals and the wider community.

Recent reports from the Sarawak Transport Ministry confirm that the MyLesen scheme has been rolled out across several constituencies, targeting thousands of participants statewide.

In Meradong alone, earlier projections had estimated around 1,500 applicants, but the final figure surpassed this, showing strong local interest.

A coordination meeting was held at the JPJ Sarikei Complex to finalise preparations for the closing ceremony, scheduled for 29 November at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Kai Chung.

The meeting was attended by Sarikei JPJ Branch Chief Nurul Fairezzah Safri and Pemanca Yii Hee Sieng, who represented the Meradong Assemblyman.

Officials expressed optimism that similar initiatives will continue in the future, ensuring more young people gain access to safe and legal driving opportunities.

With mobility being a key factor in employment and education, the MyLesen programme is seen as a vital step in empowering rural youth across Sarawak.
