KUCHING (Feb 3): A man in his late 50s was arrested on Sunday after attempting to flee from a police drug operation in Bau. The suspect, identified as a jobless individual, was apprehended by the police following a short chase.

According to Bau’s police chief, DSP Dr. Daram Ruer, a team from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division had spotted the man near a roadside in Jambusan at around 1.45 pm. The officers approached him for questioning, but the suspect attempted to flee the scene. However, his escape was short-lived, as the police managed to catch up with him and take him into custody.

Upon searching the suspect, officers discovered a cigarette pack containing a transparent plastic packet with a substance believed to be methamphetamine. The suspect was later tested and found to be positive for drugs. He admitted to being an addict for the past five years.

The police have launched an investigation under Section 12(2) and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. DSP Dr. Daram Ruer emphasized that the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division will continue its efforts through Operation Tapis (Op Tapis) to target areas known for drug-related activities. He also urged the public to report any information regarding such activities to the authorities.

This arrest highlights the ongoing battle against the rise in drug abuse in Malaysia, particularly in rural areas. The police’s swift action in this case demonstrates their commitment to tackling drug-related crime and maintaining public safety.
