Mindy Kaling, the actress, writer, and producer best known for her role as Kelly Kapoor in The Office, was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The ceremony, held on Tuesday, featured a heartfelt and humorous speech from her longtime friend and former co-star B.J. Novak.
Novak, who has been Kaling’s close friend since their time on The Office, playfully teased her about her love for recognition.
“Mindy respects and understands fame in a very intuitive way,” Novak joked. “Because in addition to being a brilliant and wildly successful showrunner, an incredible mother-of-three, a deep and caring daughter and friend and mentor to so many, Mindy is also, in her spare time, I assure you, very superficial.”
Despite the humor, Novak’s speech was also filled with admiration. He added, “We always knew Mindy would be famous, but we had no idea how beautifully she’d handle the job.”
Kaling took the stage to thank Novak and reflect on their long friendship.
“You are such an important and integral part of my family that sometimes I forget the reason that I know you is because we work together professionally,” she said.
Adding a touch of humor, she continued, “I’m as starstruck by him now at age 29 as I was when I first met you at age 24.” She then jokingly admitted, “We are both, in fact, 45.”
Kaling has had a remarkable career in Hollywood. Beyond The Office, she created and starred in The Mindy Project and serves as a writer and producer on HBO’s The Sex Lives of College Girls. She has also acted in films such as Late Night, A Wrinkle in Time, and Ocean’s 8.
During her Walk of Fame speech, Kaling acknowledged the significance of the moment, stating, “This is one of the times where I’m just gonna force myself to be in the moment.” With a big smile, she added, “I’m so happy. I love recognition, and this is just incredibly nice.”
