The suspect, a man in his fifties, was detained by officers from the Miri District Police Headquarters at the Miri Airport Terminal on the evening of 20 July 2026.

The apprehension occurred at approximately 5.30 pm, marking the culmination of a coordinated effort between Malaysian and Bruneian authorities.

The operation was made possible through strategic cooperation and the seamless sharing of intelligence between the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and the Royal Brunei Police Force (PPDB).

This collaboration highlights the growing efficacy of regional partnerships in tackling transnational criminal networks.

Investigations revealed that the individual was wanted for his alleged role in installing ‘skimming’ devices on Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) within Brunei.

Skimming is a fraudulent practice where criminals attach illicit hardware to card readers to capture magnetic stripe data and PINs, allowing them to clone cards and withdraw funds illegally.

Such crimes not only cause financial loss to victims but also undermine public confidence in banking infrastructure.

Upon his arrest at the airport, the suspect was processed according to standard legal procedures. Later that same day, he was formally handed over to officials from the Brunei Darussalam Police Force.

This swift extradition underscores the commitment of both nations to ensure that suspects face justice under the appropriate jurisdiction.

The individual will now be subject to further investigation and legal action in accordance with Bruneian laws.

The success of this operation serves as a testament to the strong diplomatic and operational ties between the PDRM and the PPDB.

By maintaining open lines of communication and coordinating their resources, both police forces have demonstrated their ability to disrupt criminal activities that span international borders.

This case reinforces the message that criminals cannot easily evade justice by crossing national boundaries.

In light of this incident, the Miri District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Farhan Lee Bin Abdullah, has issued a public advisory urging citizens to remain vigilant when using ATMs.

He emphasised the importance of exercising caution and conducting basic visual inspections before initiating any transactions.

Members of the public are advised to carefully examine the card slot, keypad, and surrounding areas of ATM machines for any signs of tampering or unusual attachments.

Skimming devices are often designed to blend in with the machine’s original components, making them difficult to detect without close scrutiny.

If anything appears loose, mismatched, or suspicious, users should refrain from using the machine immediately.

Should individuals encounter a potentially compromised ATM, they are encouraged to notify the respective bank or contact the police without delay.

Prompt reporting allows authorities to secure the scene, remove the fraudulent devices, and prevent further victimisation. Public awareness and proactive behaviour are critical lines of defence against such technological fraud.

Those who believe they may have fallen victim to skimming, or who possess information related to similar criminal activities, are urged to come forward.

Making a report at the nearest police station can provide investigators with valuable leads, aiding in the identification and arrest of other perpetrators involved in these syndicates.

As digital banking becomes increasingly prevalent, so too do the methods employed by cybercriminals and physical fraudsters.

Law enforcement agencies continue to adapt their strategies to combat these evolving threats, relying heavily on community support and international cooperation.

The recent arrest in Miri stands as a clear example of how effective collaboration can yield tangible results in the fight against financial crime.

Residents are reminded that while banks implement robust security measures, personal vigilance remains the first step in protecting one’s financial assets.

By staying informed and alert, the public can play an active role in safeguarding themselves and their communities from fraudulent schemes.
