A special committee on city services, led by Councillor Kelvin, recently carried out field inspections and engagement sessions with local food operators to improve compliance.

The inspections focus on ensuring that all eateries follow municipal waste regulations. Officers are checking the proper installation and maintenance of grease traps and food waste traps, as well as correct separation of wet and dry waste. These measures help prevent clogged drains and reduce environmental pollution in commercial areas.

“The inspection also included an engagement session with food premises owners to provide guidance and raise awareness about the importance of complying with MCC’s requirements,” the council said.

MCC has taken a firm stance on accountability. A follow-up inspection will occur within two weeks at the same location.

Premises found violating waste management rules or failing to follow proper practices will face legal action, including fines.

Beyond Bulatan Commercial Centre, MCC plans to extend these audits city-wide. This initiative ensures that all food outlets comply with licensing guidelines, with repeated offenders potentially facing business licence revocation.

By prioritising these checks, MCC aims to create a cleaner and more sustainable environment for residents and visitors.

The council urges business owners to proactively upgrade their premises and maintain high hygiene standards, demonstrating shared responsibility in keeping Miri a clean and liveable city.
