MIRI – The Miri City Council (MBM) has continued its scheduled perimeter drain maintenance programme at the Pelita Commercial Centre, reinforcing its commitment to public safety and environmental cleanliness.
The council confirmed that maintenance is carried out twice monthly to ensure the drainage system remains smooth and efficient. For May 2026, the first session took place on 1–2 May, followed by a second round on 15–16 May.
Both sessions involved flushing works around the shophouse area, aimed at preventing blockages and maintaining proper water flow.
MBM explained that the initiative is part of its wider strategy to safeguard the well-being of residents and businesses by reducing risks associated with clogged or damaged drains.
Clean and functional drainage systems are essential in preventing localised flooding, minimising health hazards, and ensuring the smooth running of commercial activities.
The Pelita Commercial Centre, one of Miri’s busiest business districts, relies heavily on effective infrastructure to support daily operations.
The council highlighted that regular maintenance helps sustain the area’s appeal and functionality, benefiting both traders and visitors.
According to MBM, the twice-monthly schedule is designed to address issues before they escalate, ensuring that drains remain clear of debris and sediment.
This proactive approach reduces the likelihood of emergency repairs and contributes to long-term cost savings for the city.
Residents and business owners have often raised concerns about drainage problems in commercial zones, particularly during heavy rainfall.
MBM’s consistent maintenance programme seeks to reassure the public that the council is attentive to these concerns and committed to delivering reliable solutions.
The council also encouraged community members to play a role in maintaining cleanliness by avoiding littering and improper disposal of waste, which often contributes to drain blockages.
MBM stressed that cooperation between the council and the public is vital in sustaining a safe and healthy environment.
With the completion of the May sessions, MBM reaffirmed that similar maintenance works will continue across other parts of Miri.
The council stated that its long-term goal is to ensure all drainage systems under its jurisdiction remain in good condition, supporting both safety and comfort for the public.
