MIRI, Jan 10 – Police in Miri have scored a major victory in the war against drug trafficking with the arrest of two local men and the seizure of drugs worth nearly RM400,000.
The suspects, aged 41 and 50, were detained during a raid on January 9 at a property in Krokop. The successful operation was carried out by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) from the Sarawak police headquarters, with assistance from the Miri District Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division (BSJND).
District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu stated that the raid uncovered a staggering haul of illicit drugs, including 1,579.6 grammes of Ecstasy pills and 4,193 grammes of methamphetamine. The combined street value of these drugs is estimated at RM397,941.50. Authorities also seized a vehicle valued at RM8,000 as part of the operation.
The two suspects are currently under a seven-day remand to assist with investigations. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries severe penalties such as the death sentence or life imprisonment with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.
ACP Alexson commended the team for their swift and precise action, stating that the operation highlights the ongoing commitment of the police to curb drug-related crimes in the region.
In a public statement, the Miri District Police urged residents to report any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking to their nearest police station. “Community cooperation is crucial in helping us tackle the drug menace,” Alexson added.
This significant bust sends a clear message to those involved in illegal drug activities that the authorities are ever-vigilant in their efforts to protect the community.
