MIRI, 3 Aug – The rural stop-and-go bus service connecting Miri to the inland regions of Long Lama, Bekenu, and Simpang Ngu (Batu Niah) has been significantly enhanced, with the introduction of more daily trips and a reorganisation of routes effective 1 August 2025.
The enhancement was officially launched at the Wisma Pelita Tunku Bus Station, officiated by Sarawak Minister of Transport and Senadin Assemblyman, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin. The ceremony was also attended by Telang Usan Assemblyman, Dato Dennis Ngau, and representatives from Miri Transport Company Sdn. Bhd. (MTC), the service provider.
Dato Sri Lee explained that although the rural bus service was initially introduced on a trial basis on 8 March, it has garnered strong support, particularly from residents of Long Lama.
“This initiative stemmed from requests by local elected representatives and was implemented with the support of the Sarawak Ministry of Transport and the approval of the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP),” he said.
Three key routes are part of the new service structure:
- Miri–Bekenu–Miri
- Miri–Simpang Ngu (Batu Niah)–Miri
- Miri–Long Lama–Miri
Each route now operates four return trips daily, significantly improving accessibility for rural communities.
The move aims to reduce transportation costs for rural residents while creating new economic opportunities through better mobility.
Dato Sri Lee also mentioned that the Ministry of Transport is open to considering the construction of a dedicated minibus terminal in Long Lama, should the positive response to the service continue. Additionally, more trips may be scheduled during festive seasons or periods of increased demand.
This initiative is part of the Sarawak government’s broader push to improve rural connectivity and uplift the socioeconomic wellbeing of remote communities.
