MIRI – Heart health must become a way of life, not just a hospital concern, said Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, during the World Heart Day 2025 celebration at Miri Mall Lutong on Sunday.
Speaking to attendees, Datuk Sebastian emphasized that heart disease remains the leading cause of death globally, including in Malaysia.
He urged the public to take proactive steps such as eating healthily, exercising regularly, managing stress, and undergoing routine health screenings.
This year’s World Heart Day theme, “Feel Your Rhythm, Live Your Health”, served as a call to action for Malaysians to reassess their lifestyles and make heart care a daily habit.
The event, organized by Borneo Medical Centre (BMC) Miri, featured free health screenings, consultations, and educational activities aimed at raising awareness across all age groups.
“Heart health is the responsibility of all of us,” Datuk Sebastian said. “Today we care about our own health, tomorrow we share knowledge with our families and neighbors. Together we build a healthier community.”
He also extended gratitude to BMC Miri, healthcare professionals, and volunteers for their dedication in making the event a success, and expressed hope for more community-driven health initiatives in the future.
World Heart Day, observed annually on 29 September, is a global campaign led by the World Heart Federation to promote cardiovascular health and reduce preventable deaths.
The Miri event aligned with this mission, encouraging residents to take ownership of their well-being and support one another in building a heart-conscious society.
