KUCHING: Despite steady rain throughout the morning, the Chinese New Year Open House hosted by N11 assemblyman YB See Chee How drew an overwhelming response from the public, proving once again that community spirit in Sarawak remains strong regardless of the weather.
Held in conjunction with the 2026 Chinese New Year celebrations, the open house saw more than 800 residents, friends and Sarawakians from all walks of life turning up to share the festive joy. While the skies were grey and the ground was wet, the mood at the venue was warm, friendly and full of laughter, reflecting the true meaning of the celebration.
In his remarks, YB See Chee How expressed his heartfelt appreciation to everyone who made the effort to attend. He said the event was intentionally kept simple, staying true to local traditions rather than hosting a grand banquet. Guests were treated to familiar Kuching favourites such as kolomee and Sarawak laksa, enjoyed over casual conversations that strengthened ties between leaders and the community.
The event was further graced by the presence of Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who dropped by despite a tight schedule. His visit was warmly welcomed by attendees, and he even managed to enjoy a quick bowl of laksa before continuing with his duties. His presence added significance to the gathering and reflected continued support for grassroots community engagement.
Much of the success of the open house was due to the dedication of individuals and volunteers who worked tirelessly throughout the morning. Local food operators, including Kolo Mee Ah Ling and Laksa Ivan, ensured that every serving was prepared and served fresh despite the challenging weather. Ah Fook and the beverage team also played a key role in keeping guests comfortable and refreshed as the rain persisted.
The open house also saw meaningful participation from several community groups, with members from Pertubuhan Komuniti Progresif Kuching, the Kuching Autistic Association and representatives of the deaf community in Sarawak joining the celebration. Their presence reflected the inclusive spirit of the event and the shared belief that festive occasions should be enjoyed together, without leaving anyone behind.
As the event drew to a close, YB See Chee How thanked all volunteers, team members and residents who stood together through the rain. He called on the community to continue moving forward in unity for a better Sarawak and wished everyone a blessed and prosperous Chinese New Year. He expressed hope that the Year of the Horse would bring good health, happiness and success to all.
