KOTA SAMARAHAN – The Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) convened a meeting with waste collection contractors on 16 April 2026, underscoring its determination to enhance service quality and address public concerns over waste management.
The session, held at 11.00 am, introduced a new operational approach under the theme “No more old ways, but way forward & improvement.”
The council emphasised that the primary objective is to reduce complaints from residents while ensuring more efficient and reliable services across its jurisdiction.
Among the key issues discussed was the upcoming tender process for waste collection contracts, expected to be advertised in early June 2026.
The revised conditions include several significant measures aimed at improving accountability and service delivery.
These measures involve the installation of GPS tracking systems on collection vehicles, strict compliance with regulations set by agencies such as LPKP, JPJ, and PDRM, and the adoption of an open tender system to encourage participation from qualified contractors.
MPKS also highlighted the importance of systematic and orderly solid waste management, noting that better organisation would contribute to cleaner surroundings and improved community well-being.
The council stressed that all service contracts under its supervision must hold review meetings with contractors at least once every three months.
This requirement is intended to ensure continuous monitoring and provide opportunities for adjustments where necessary.
Council representatives reiterated their commitment to delivering cleaner, more efficient, and higher-quality services.
They explained that the new framework is designed not only to improve operational standards but also to strengthen public trust in municipal services.
The initiative reflects broader efforts across Sarawak to modernise waste management systems and align them with sustainable urban development goals.
By introducing GPS monitoring and enforcing compliance with legal provisions, MPKS aims to increase transparency and reduce inefficiencies in waste collection.
Residents have long voiced concerns about inconsistent waste collection schedules and service quality.
The council’s latest measures are expected to address these issues by ensuring contractors are held accountable and that services meet the expectations of the community.
MPKS reaffirmed its stance that effective waste management is central to maintaining public health, environmental sustainability, and the overall quality of life in Kota Samarahan.
The council pledged to continue working closely with contractors and stakeholders to achieve these objectives.
