BETONG – In conjunction with Earth Day 2026, Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) Betong successfully organised a tree planting programme on 8 April, in collaboration with the Sri Aman Regional Forest Office and the Restoration and Industrial Forestry Division (RIFD).
The initiative saw the planting of 180 saplings across the school grounds, representing a mix of forest, landscape, and fruit species.
Among the trees planted were Belian and Engkabang, alongside ornamental species such as Doa. Local fruit trees, including dabai, durian, rambutan, guava bol, mempelam, and cempedak were also added, reflecting Sarawak’s rich biodiversity.
The programme involved approximately 305 participants, comprising teachers, students, and staff. The opening ceremony was officiated by Deputy Director of Sarawak Forestry Tuan Semilan Anak Ripot together with MRSM Betong Deputy Principal of Talent Development Puan Hamidah Ali. Their presence underscored the importance of collective responsibility in environmental conservation.
Beyond tree planting, the event featured an awareness talk delivered by Mr Haazizkin Haji Jumat from RIFD, who highlighted the significance of restoration efforts and sustainable forestry practices.
Students also showcased creativity through exhibitions and innovation projects, using recycled materials to design eco-friendly products.
Representatives from JHS served as judges, adding a competitive yet educational element to the programme.
Organisers emphasised that the initiative was not only about greening the school environment but also about instilling environmental awareness among young people.
By involving students directly, the programme aimed to nurture a sense of stewardship and responsibility towards nature.
The collaboration between MRSM Betong and forestry agencies reflects Sarawak’s broader commitment to sustainability.
With global concerns about climate change and deforestation, such grassroots initiatives are seen as vital in promoting conservation values and supporting the state’s long-term environmental agenda.
The event concluded with participants pledging to continue their efforts in protecting the environment, ensuring that Earth Day serves as a reminder of the shared duty to safeguard natural resources for future generations.
