KUCHING (Dec 10): A new permanent flood relief centre (PPK) will soon be established near Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Beradek in Padawan, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas. This move aligns with the federal government’s plan to set up permanent centres in every state, aimed at reducing the reliance on temporary flood relief centres (PPS) located in schools.
During a press conference, Uggah explained that the construction of this permanent flood relief centre was made possible with funding from the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma). The new centre, designed to accommodate around 500 people, will be equipped with comprehensive facilities to provide better flood response and relief.
“Relying on schools as PPS could disrupt the school schedule and daily operations. Hence, this new centre will provide a more efficient solution,” Uggah stated, emphasizing the importance of permanent facilities for flood relief.
He also mentioned Batu Kawah as another flood-prone area being considered for a future flood relief centre. However, Uggah made it clear that the construction of these centres will be carefully assessed to ensure the facilities meet the needs of the affected communities.
The announcement came after Uggah chaired the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) meeting, where he reassured the public that Sarawak is fully prepared for the 2024–2025 Northeast Monsoon. All relevant agencies are on high alert to manage the prolonged wet season.
To support disaster management efforts, a total of 661 PPS have been set up across Sarawak. These centres are ready to accommodate flood victims, with more than 7,500 personnel from various agencies on standby.
“Our SDMC is highly experienced, and we are confident in our ability to handle the challenges posed by the monsoon season,” said Uggah, who is also the Infrastructure and Port Development Minister.
In addition to the personnel, Uggah highlighted the logistical support available, which includes 214 boats, 263 four-wheel-drive vehicles, 32 ambulances, and other essential assets such as helicopters and drones. He also noted that RM2.97 million has been allocated to enhance existing PPS facilities across Sarawak’s 12 divisions.
Also present at the press conference were Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Minister Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, and Deputy State Secretary Datu Buckland Bangik.
