Sarawak’s Transport Minister, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, announced the ambitious project during the Sarawak Transport Forum 2024 at the Riverside Majestic Hotel. He emphasized that while the Doha model serves as inspiration, the new Kuching International Airport will go beyond that standard.

“Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has envisioned a state-of-the-art airport. While the Doha model provides a guide, our goal is to improve upon it and create a truly futuristic design,” said Lee.

Boosting Sarawak’s Aerospace Industry

In addition to the airport project, the Sarawak government is finalizing the acquisition of MASwings airlines to enhance connectivity. Lee revealed plans to develop a robust aerospace ecosystem in Sarawak, including:

  • Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities for aircraft.
  • Training centers for aircraft engineers, mechanics, and pilots.
  • Attracting companies to establish aircraft parts manufacturing operations.

A key highlight of the project is the establishment of a modern regional cargo terminal, aiming to strengthen Sarawak’s logistics capabilities.

Building an Aerotropolis

The ultimate vision is to create an aerotropolis—a vibrant urban hub centered around aviation. Lee described it as a “dynamic development” that would integrate the airport with surrounding industries, boosting Sarawak’s economy and global standing.
