SRI AMAN – A new chapter for religious and community life began in the Tanjung Bijat area on Friday with the official opening of the Nahdatul Islam Mosque. The event was officiated by YB Datuk Dr. Haji Abdul Rahman bin Haji Junaidi, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department. His portfolio includes responsibilities for the Regional Development Agency, Kuching North City Hall, and Islamic Affairs. In his address, he highlighted the significance of the mosque not just as a place of prayer but as a cornerstone for social cohesion and spiritual growth within the community.

Also in attendance was Sahibus Siyadah Tuan Haji Mual bin Suaud, Director of the Sarawak Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) and Secretary of the Sarawak Islamic Council. He was joined by the President of the Sarawak Islamic Council, Datuk Haji Misnu bin Haji Taha. The presence of these senior figures underscored the state’s commitment to providing adequate religious infrastructure for its Muslim population.

The ceremony, held on 24 July 2026, corresponding to 9 Safar 1448H, was attended by various heads of departments, community leaders, and guests of honour. The gathering reflected a strong sense of unity among the attendees, who came together to celebrate the completion of the project. Local residents played a vital role in enlivening the event, demonstrating their enthusiasm and gratitude for the new facility.

The Nahdatul Islam Mosque is expected to serve multiple functions beyond daily worship. It is envisioned as a centre for knowledge dissemination, where religious teachings can be strengthened and shared. By providing a dedicated space for learning and discussion, the mosque aims to empower the local ummah with greater understanding of their faith and its application in modern life.

Furthermore, the establishment of this mosque is seen as a catalyst for community development. It provides a focal point for social activities, fostering stronger bonds among neighbours and promoting a spirit of mutual assistance. Such institutions are critical in maintaining the cultural and religious identity of the area while adapting to contemporary needs.

Officials expressed hope that the mosque would become a hub for unity in the Tanjung Bijat area and its surroundings. By bringing people together for communal prayers and events, it helps to bridge gaps and build a more resilient society. The emphasis on development suggests that the facility will also host programmes aimed at improving the welfare of its congregation.

The completion of the Nahdatul Islam Mosque adds to the growing network of religious sites across Sarawak. It reflects ongoing efforts by the state government and religious authorities to ensure that communities have access to well-maintained and functional places of worship. This investment in infrastructure supports the broader goal of creating a harmonious and prosperous society.

As the doors open to the public, the focus now shifts to the management and programming of the mosque. Community leaders and religious teachers will work together to ensure that the facility is used effectively to meet the spiritual and educational needs of the residents. The successful opening marks the beginning of a new era for religious life in Kampung Melayu Tanjung Bijat.
