Off-Road Training Boosts Government Drivers’ Skills in Rural Sarawak

TATAU – Government drivers in Sarawak are being equipped with enhanced skills to operate in rural and challenging terrains through the Driver Strengthening Course (Practical Off-Road Training) and the Community Outing Programme held in Data Kakus, Tatau, from 9 to 10 December 2025.

The two-day programme, organised by the Bintulu Division Resident’s Office, was officiated by Bintulu Division Resident, Datu Nyurak Keti.

He explained that the course was designed to improve the capabilities of new drivers in the division, particularly those required to navigate hilly, slippery and difficult routes common in Bintulu, especially during the rainy season.

Datu Nyurak stressed that off-road training is crucial for ensuring drivers can operate vehicles safely and efficiently in diverse field conditions. He added that safety and driving discipline were key components, as government drivers play an important role in supporting administrative functions and delivering official duties in rural areas.

The course modules included training on challenging routes, risk management, adherence to standard operating procedures, and professional driving ethics.

New drivers from the Bintulu Division administration participated, gaining practical experience to prepare them for real-world conditions.

Alongside the training, the Community Outing Programme attracted around 400 residents, who engaged directly with representatives from 16 government agencies.

Each agency presented its functions, policies and latest services, while residents voiced questions, suggestions and concerns.

Datu Nyurak encouraged Community Leaders and Tribal Leaders (KMKK) to act as intermediaries between the people and the government, ensuring that local issues are communicated effectively and development projects are implemented smoothly.

He emphasised that such field approaches allow the government to better understand the genuine needs of rural communities.

In his address, Datu Nyurak also outlined a long-term proposal to establish a Tubau Subdistrict, which would include the construction of a new township and an agricultural training centre.

The plan aims to catalyse development in the area and improve government service delivery, given its closer proximity to residents compared to the current distance from Data Kakus to the Tatau District Office.

During the programme, Datu Nyurak visited Kampung Data Sangela and Rumah Panjang Rejun Lin, which are under construction, to review progress and hear directly from residents about their needs.

Also present were Tatau District Officer Calvin Ligong, Sebauh District Officer Thadeus Ling Bartholomew Allu, JKR Bintulu Divisional Engineer Ir Lau Sie Hung, JBALB Bintulu Divisional Water Engineer Lai Kien Hong, along with staff and representatives from various government agencies.

The initiative reflects Sarawak’s commitment to strengthening rural service delivery, improving driver preparedness, and fostering closer engagement between communities and government institutions.
