KUCHING – The Immigration Department of Malaysia (JIM) Sarawak has detained 20 foreigners during an enforcement operation known as Ops Selera, carried out around Kuching City on 16 April 2026.
The operation was conducted by the Kuching Enforcement Division following public complaints about foreigners suspected of working without valid documentation.
A total of 30 enforcement officers were mobilised to inspect several food and beverage premises identified as hotspots for illegal activity.
Among the locations targeted was a restaurant near City Square, Jalan Pending, which was suspected of engaging in unauthorised practices, including online gambling. In addition, a seafood outlet in Batu 8 was raided to ensure compliance with immigration regulations.
During the inspections, officers checked the travel documents and work permits of workers at the premises. The majority of those detained were found to be working without valid passes or permits.
All individuals taken into custody were transferred to the Immigration Depot for further investigation under existing immigration laws.
Ops Selera reflects JIM Sarawak’s ongoing commitment to maintaining the rule of law and addressing concerns raised by the public.
The department emphasised that enforcement operations will continue to be intensified to safeguard the community and ensure that businesses comply with legal requirements.
The operation also highlights the broader challenge of managing undocumented workers in urban centres, where demand for labour in the food and beverage sector often attracts foreign workers.
Authorities have reiterated that strict enforcement is necessary to protect legitimate businesses and uphold national security.
By acting on public complaints and conducting thorough inspections, JIM Sarawak aims to reassure the community that immigration laws are being enforced consistently.
The department has urged employers to ensure that all workers possess valid documentation and has reminded the public of the importance of reporting suspected illegal activities.
Ops Selera is part of a series of enforcement measures designed to strengthen compliance and deter illegal employment practices.
The latest operation underscores the government’s determination to address immigration-related issues while maintaining public confidence in law enforcement efforts.
