KUCHING, 12 April 2026 — The Kuching Autistic Association (KAA) has expressed its heartfelt appreciation to more than 2,000 participants who took part in the Meow Autism Run 2026, marking another successful community-driven event aimed at promoting autism awareness and inclusion.
The run, held in a spirit of unity and compassion, attracted a diverse crowd comprising individuals, families, students, corporate teams, and representatives from various non-governmental organisations supporting special needs communities. The strong turnout highlighted growing public awareness and support for individuals on the autism spectrum in Sarawak.
The event was officiated by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor, Dato Wee Hong Seng, who commended the encouraging participation and community spirit displayed throughout the programme. He also acknowledged a proposal raised by KAA President Dr Catherine Chen regarding the construction of a children’s playground at Taman Sahabat, stating that MBKS would consider the request for the benefit of the public.
KAA Secretary and Organising Chairperson of the run, Duane Reggie, described the event as both humbling and inspiring. He noted that the overwhelming support from the community reflects a positive shift towards greater acceptance and understanding of autism.
According to him, every participant, volunteer, and supporter played a meaningful role in making the event a success. The association also extended its gratitude to sponsors and partners whose contributions continue to support vital programmes under KAA.
The funds raised and support garnered from such initiatives are crucial, as KAA requires approximately RM1.2 million annually to sustain operations at its Autism Resource and Training Centre located at Jalan Desa Wira. These funds are used to provide early intervention programmes, therapy services, educational support, and community outreach efforts, as well as to subsidise training for students with autism.
The success of the Meow Autism Run 2026 reflects a growing movement in Kuching towards building a more inclusive society that embraces diversity and supports individuals with special needs. Events like this not only promote physical activity but also strengthen community bonds and encourage greater empathy and understanding.
KAA reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for autism awareness and empowering individuals on the spectrum to achieve their full potential. The association also expressed hope for continued public support in future initiatives.
The event concluded on a positive note, leaving participants with a renewed sense of unity and purpose in supporting the autism community.
