KUCHING — The close royal ties between Pahang and Sarawak are paving the way for stronger collaboration in Malaysia’s traditional craft industry, following the visit of His Royal Highness Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, and members of the royal family to Sarawak.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said the visit would further enhance cultural and craft relations between both states.
He revealed that the Sultan of Pahang has graciously agreed to personally witness the Sarawak Regatta, which will be held next week at the Kuching Waterfront.
“The Sultan of Pahang will be present with his family to witness the Regatta and will also visit our craft exhibition, including the traditional keringkam embroidery,” said Abang Zohari.
He added that during his recent visit to Pahang—made at the invitation of the Sultan in conjunction with the Pahang Heritage Festival—discussions were held to explore cooperation in the area of craft development.
“We will forge cooperation in terms of craft development between the two states. This partnership will allow our artisans to share knowledge, techniques, and resources to preserve traditional craftsmanship,” he said after officiating the Opening Ceremony of the Sarawak Regatta 2025 at the Kuching Riverbank today.
Meanwhile, Abang Zohari also shared that the Sarawak International Dragon Boat Race (SIDBR) 2025 has received overwhelming response, with 23 countries confirmed to participate.
Earlier, the Premier officially launched the SIDBR 2025 by performing the traditional “eye-dotting” ceremony for the Dragon Boat Regatta, followed by the “flag-off” for the Battle of the Dragons event.
This year’s race will see 62 teams involving more than 2,000 participants competing across seven categories, including the International Premier Open 20’s, Premier Women 12’s, and International Cancer Survivors Open.
The event not only highlights Sarawak’s vibrant cultural and sporting scene but also strengthens international ties and tourism appeal through traditional river-based sports and crafts. – UKAS
