Police arrest man in Permai Jaya assault case within 24 hours

SIBU: Police have arrested a 57-year-old man suspected of attacking his wife and daughter at their home in Jalan Permai Jaya here early this morning.

Sibu District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Zulkipli Suhaili, said the suspect was detained in the Kanowit area at about 4.15pm following swift action by the police team. He added that the suspect will be brought to the Sibu Court tomorrow (October 30) for a remand application to assist further investigation.

“The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for intentionally causing grievous bodily harm using a dangerous weapon,” he said in a media statement this evening. “The police are still determining the motive behind the attack and urge the public not to make any speculation that could affect the investigation.”

ACP Zulkipli said anyone with relevant information should contact the Sibu District Police Headquarters (IPD) at 084-336144, Investigating Officer Inspector Ahmad Hakimi Abd Azid at 011-31873715, or any nearby police station to assist with the investigation.

Earlier, the Sibu IPD confirmed receiving a report of a violent domestic incident at 7.00am through a MERS 999 emergency call made by one of the victims. According to police, the caller reported that he and his mother had been attacked with a machete by his own father before the suspect fled the scene.

Following the attack, the suspect’s wife suffered critical injuries and is currently being treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Sibu Hospital. Meanwhile, the couple’s 20-year-old daughter sustained serious head injuries but is reported to be in stable condition.

“After receiving the report, a Task Force team was immediately formed to carry out investigations and track down the suspect involved,” ACP Zulkipli explained.

He added that the police’s quick response and coordination led to the suspect’s arrest within 24 hours of the incident, ensuring public safety and reinforcing confidence in law enforcement efforts in the district.
