IPOH – Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has delivered a mixed assessment of Malaysia’s current standing, praising recent economic gains whilst cautioning against a dangerous drift into self-satisfaction.
His remarks came during the opening ceremony of the Perak MADANI Rakyat 2026 programme, a community-focused event held in the state capital.
The Prime Minister acknowledged that the nation’s economic performance has been notably strong. Growth figures have consistently exceeded initial projections, he said, and investment inflows have reached unprecedented levels.
At the same time, both inflation and unemployment remain low – a combination that many larger economies are struggling to achieve.
Despite these successes, Anwar warned that a culture of comfort must not be allowed to take hold among policymakers or the public. “The warning against complacency cannot be ignored,” he emphasised.
Turning to global affairs, the Prime Minister painted a far more troubling picture. He highlighted the volatile geopolitical environment, particularly the ongoing conflict involving Israel.
He noted that the United States’ continued backing of Israel against Iran is contributing to a major deterioration in global stability. This situation, he argued, poses significant risks that could eventually affect worldwide trade and security.
In response to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Malaysia has stepped up its diplomatic engagements. Anwar revealed that he has been in direct contact with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to coordinate the delivery of relief aid.
As a result, 30 containers of donations collected from ordinary Malaysians have been dispatched to Gaza through Egyptian channels.
On the domestic front, the government has introduced concrete cost-saving measures. Most foreign trips by members of the administration have been cancelled to cut unnecessary expenditure.
Security forces have also been instructed to increase their preparedness. Officials fear that the current economic strain could lead to a rise in criminal activity and cross-border smuggling.
The Prime Minister concluded his speech with a call for resilience and unity. He urged Malaysians to remain grateful for the country’s blessings, patient in the face of difficulties, and committed to collective action.
“Our priority at this time is to ensure that the nation’s survival and future are preserved,” he told the audience.
The Perak MADANI Rakyat 2026 programme continues over the coming days, with various government agencies offering direct services to grassroots communities across the state.
