BAU – Police in Bau have intensified patrols across village areas and public spaces as part of their security measures during the Gawai festival season.
The initiative, led by the Bau District Police Headquarters (IPD Bau) Mobile Patrol Vehicle (MPV) unit, aims to ensure that residents can celebrate the festival in a safe and peaceful environment.
The patrols, which cover main village routes and community centres, are designed to deter crime and reassure the public during one of Sarawak’s most significant cultural celebrations.
Officers have been seen conducting regular rounds in residential areas, with a focus on maintaining order and preventing disturbances.
The Gawai festival, celebrated annually by the Dayak community, marks the end of the harvest season and is widely recognised as a time of family gatherings, cultural performances, and communal festivities.
With large numbers of people travelling and congregating, authorities have emphasised the importance of heightened vigilance to safeguard communities.
Police representatives stated that the increased presence is part of their commitment to community safety, particularly during festive periods when risks of theft, accidents, and other incidents may rise.
“PDRM is always committed to maintaining community safety, especially during the festive season,” the force noted in its statement.
Local residents have welcomed the move, acknowledging that visible patrols help create a sense of security and allow families to enjoy the celebrations without fear.
The initiative also reflects broader efforts by law enforcement agencies across Sarawak to strengthen public confidence and ensure that traditional festivals can be observed without disruption.
Authorities have encouraged the public to cooperate with police officers during patrols and to report any suspicious activity immediately.
The proactive approach is expected to continue throughout the Gawai season, reinforcing the message that safety and harmony remain priorities for the community.
The Bau IPD’s actions highlight the balance between cultural celebration and public safety, demonstrating how law enforcement adapts its operations to meet the needs of local traditions.
As the Gawai festival unfolds, the presence of patrol units serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to protect both heritage and community wellbeing.
