Rafflesia Bloom Awaits Visitors at Gunung Gading National Park Today

KUCHING (Jan 3): Nature lovers, take note! Gunung Gading National Park in Lundu is buzzing with excitement as the rare and majestic Rafflesia flower is expected to be in full bloom today.

In a Facebook announcement, the park shared that this breathtaking natural event promises an extraordinary experience for visitors.

“This marks the beginning of a beautiful transformation, and we’re eagerly watching as it continues to bloom fully in the coming days. We appreciate your patience and enthusiasm throughout this journey, and we can’t wait for you to witness its full splendour,” the post read.

Park officials highlighted that this particular Rafflesia is expected to be larger than usual, sparking even greater interest among nature enthusiasts.

The flower’s development has been carefully monitored since Dec 13, when its matured bud was first discovered. Since then, updates and glimpses of its growth have captivated followers on social media, drawing local and international attention.

Visitor Guidelines

Visitors planning to witness this rare spectacle are reminded to adhere to park regulations for a safe and enjoyable experience. Key guidelines include:

  • Online registration: Complete registration prior to arrival.
  • Appropriate attire: Wear suitable clothing for outdoor activities.
  • Follow instructions: Obey guides and maintain cleanliness in the park.

A Global Treasure in Sarawak

According to the Forest Department Sarawak (FDS), the Rafflesia is the largest and one of the most magnificent flowers globally. Sarawak is home to three species: Rafflesia arnoldii, Rafflesia pricei, and the endemic Rafflesia tuan-mudae.

Though the flower is often associated with its foul odour, FDS noted that Sarawak’s species only emit a faint smell. Its habitat includes mixed dipterocarp and secondary forests, such as Gunung Gading National Park, Lanjak-Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary, Padawan, and the Kelabit Highlands.

Nature enthusiasts are encouraged to seize this opportunity to witness one of nature’s most remarkable creations.
