KUALA TATAU – A new reading corner was officially launched at Masjid Al-Amin, Kampung Kuala Tatau, on 30 April, marking an important step in expanding access to reading materials and strengthening literacy among the local community.
The handover and launching ceremony was officiated by Dato Haidar Khan bin Asghar Khan, Deputy Chairman of the Bintulu Development Board. Also present was Mr Shahrezy Sulaiman, representing Yang Berhormat Iskandar Turkee, ADUN N.67 Jepak.
The event was further witnessed by Mr Latif bin Upit, representing the Assistant General Manager of Environmental Services, and Mr Affendi bin Iezara, Manager of the BDA Public Library.
The Reading Corner was formally handed over to the Kampung Haji Ismail Kuala Tatau Committee (JKKK), represented by Tuan Haji Jus@Musa bin Saruji, in the presence of Puan Haliza Haji Mudin, Penghulu of Tatau District.
Responsibility for managing and sustaining the Reading Corner will rest with the village JKKK, supported by community volunteers.
Their role will be to ensure that the facility remains active and accessible, providing continuous library services to residents.
The Reading Corner has been stocked with a variety of reading materials, designed to cater to different age groups and interests.
Organisers highlighted that the initiative aims to strengthen the role of libraries as centres of knowledge beyond their physical premises, while also fostering stronger ties between libraries and local communities.
Community leaders emphasised that the Reading Corner is more than just a facility; it represents a strategic effort to cultivate a knowledgeable society.
By encouraging reading habits and providing easy access to books, the programme seeks to inspire lifelong learning and empower residents with skills that contribute to personal and collective growth.
The initiative also aligns with broader development goals in Bintulu, where literacy and education are seen as key drivers of social progress.
By situating the Reading Corner within a community hub such as Masjid Al-Amin, organisers hope to make reading a more integrated part of daily life.
With strong support from local authorities, the BDA Public Library, and community volunteers, the Reading Corner Kuala Tatau is expected to become a valuable resource for residents.
It stands as a symbol of collaboration between institutions and communities in building a culture of knowledge and literacy across Sarawak.
