SERIAN – A 29-year-old man from Kampung Paon Sungai Rimu, Serian, has been sentenced to five years and one month in prison, along with two strokes of the cane, for repeat drug offences. The ruling was delivered at Sessions Court 1 in Kuching on 7 July 2026.
The offender was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (ADB) 1952, read together with Section 39C(1) of the same Act, which provides for enhanced penalties against repeat offenders.
In addition to the custodial sentence and corporal punishment, the court ordered that he serve a two-year supervision order under Section 38B of the ADB 1952 upon completion of his prison term.
The Serian District Police Headquarters (IPD Serian) confirmed the sentencing in a media statement, noting that the case was handled by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division.
Authorities stressed that the ruling reflects the seriousness with which the courts and police view repeat drug offences, particularly in efforts to curb drug abuse and trafficking in Sarawak.
Datuk Ir. Aidel Lariwoo, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, has previously highlighted the government’s commitment to tackling drug-related crime, emphasising that enforcement agencies are working closely with communities to reduce the prevalence of narcotics.
The police reiterated that strict action will continue to be taken against repeat offenders under Section 39C of the ADB 1952.
The Serian Narcotics Division has been actively conducting operations to identify and prosecute individuals involved in drug distribution and consumption.
Officials explained that the sentencing serves as a warning to others who may consider reoffending, as the law provides for heavier penalties in cases of repeated violations.
Drug abuse remains a pressing concern in Sarawak, with authorities focusing on both enforcement and prevention.
Community outreach programmes, awareness campaigns, and rehabilitation initiatives are being implemented alongside legal measures to address the issue comprehensively.
Police urged the public to cooperate by reporting suspicious activities and supporting ongoing efforts to safeguard communities from the dangers of narcotics.
The Serian District Police reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining law and order, ensuring that offenders are held accountable under the law.
