GEDONG – The Sarawak government has confirmed an allocation of RM4 billion under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) to construct government quarters across the state, aimed at improving living conditions for both state and federal civil servants.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced the initiative during the launch of the Digitalisation of Health Clinics using the Cloud-Based Clinic Management System (CCMS) and the Agenda Nasional Malaysia Sihat (ANMS) programme at Patinggi Ali Hall.
He explained that the quarters would address long-standing challenges faced by civil servants posted to remote districts without adequate housing facilities.
The Premier highlighted that the new quarters would be designed as apartment-style residences, equipped with gymnasiums and recreational amenities to ensure comfort and wellbeing.
“This facility will later be used jointly by Federal and Sarawak agencies, thus strengthening cooperation between both parties to build a stronger Sarawak and Malaysia in the future,” he said.
He noted that several projects have already been initiated, including developments in Mulu, located near the airport, Limbang, adjacent to the Resident Office, and Jepak in Bintulu.
These sites reflect the government’s strategy of placing quarters close to administrative centres and essential facilities.
The Premier emphasised that the initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance the welfare of civil servants, ensuring they can perform their duties effectively without being hindered by inadequate housing.
He added that the shared use of quarters between federal and state agencies demonstrates a new model of cooperation that strengthens institutional ties.
Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian were present at the ceremony, alongside Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, Minister for Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, and Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.
Also in attendance were Deputy Health Minister Dato Hanifah Hajar Taib, Samarahan Division Resident Mohamad Irwan Bahari Bujang, and other senior officials.
The announcement aligns with wider housing initiatives under the 13MP, which also include plans for 20,000 affordable homes by 2030 to address housing imbalances in Sarawak.
Officials have stressed that the quarters will not only provide accommodation but also foster community living, with facilities designed to encourage social interaction and healthy lifestyles.
By integrating modern housing with recreational infrastructure, the Sarawak government aims to create a supportive environment for civil servants, particularly those stationed in rural and underserved areas.
The Premier reiterated that this investment reflects the state’s commitment to sustainable development and improving quality of life for its workforce.
