KUCHING, April 8 – Traffic woes along the busy Mile 8 stretch of Jalan Kuching-Serian may soon be a thing of the past, as the federal government has approved RM480 million to construct a much-needed flyover aimed at easing the daily congestion.
This major development was announced by Batu Kitang assemblyman Datuk Lo Khere Chiang, who confirmed that the allocation was approved by Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
Lo explained that the project is currently still in the preliminary stages, involving sighting approval and engineering design. No consultants have been appointed yet, but the process is underway.
“It’s still too early to say exactly when the project will begin. But it is already in the pipeline. Once the Mile 8 flyover is completed, the long-standing traffic issue here will finally be resolved,” said Lo during a press conference held at Mile 9.
He added that the actual timeline will only become clear after the consultants are brought in, the engineering designs are finalised, and the tender process is completed.
The Mile 8 junction is notorious for its heavy traffic congestion, especially during peak hours, often causing kilometre-long jams. For years, road users and nearby residents have voiced their frustrations and urged authorities to take action.
Datuk Lo expressed his gratitude to the public for their patience all these years. “This issue has caused so much inconvenience, but I thank the people for their understanding. Finally, we have a solid step forward with this RM480 million approval,” he said.
Once completed, the flyover is expected to bring smoother traffic flow not just for Mile 8, but also along the wider Kuching-Serian route, which serves as a key connection for thousands of commuters daily. — The Borneo Post
