KOTA SAMARAHAN – The Samarahan Food and Cultural Festival has once again demonstrated its ability to revitalise multiple sectors, combining culinary delights, cultural showcases, and community activities into one vibrant event.
Sarawak’s Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, highlighted that the festival not only provides a platform for local entrepreneurs to generate income but also stimulates other industries through its diverse programmes.
He noted that the inclusion of sports, cultural performances, and community activities adds significant value, creating opportunities for wider participation and engagement.
“When we involve sports events, cultural events and so on, we revive other industries to some extent. If we involve cultural events, it can elevate the culture of the participating tribes,” he said during the closing ceremony of the festival on Monday.
The Minister emphasised that the festival’s impact extends beyond food sales, with cultural performances helping to showcase Sarawak’s rich diversity.
The involvement of different communities reflects the state’s inclusive spirit and strengthens cultural pride among participants.
This year’s edition recorded a notable increase in sales revenue, with figures expected to reach RM600,000 compared to RM407,000 last year.
The figure does not include additional business generated by shops and premises around the festival grounds, which benefited from the influx of visitors.
Dato Sri Abdul Karim described the festival as a comprehensive platform that brings together multiple elements, producing positive outcomes for both entrepreneurial and cultural sectors.
He stressed that such events are vital in promoting Sarawak’s cultural heritage while supporting economic growth.
The festival also served as a medium to highlight the state’s cultural diversity, with performances and activities involving various ethnic groups. This inclusivity, he said, strengthens unity and provides a deeper appreciation of Sarawak’s traditions.
The closing ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Kota Samarahan Municipal Council Chairman Councillor Abang Ismawi Abang Ali, Samarahan Division Resident Representative Rais Ahmat, Padawan Municipal Council Chairman Councillor Tan Kai, Asajaya District Officer Jerry Zannuddin Bidin, Kota Samarahan Municipal Council Secretary Zuraida Idris, Deputy Chairman Councillor Daily Joseph, and Festival Organising Chairman Councillor Assoc. Prof. Dr Sopian Bujang.
The success of the Samarahan Food and Cultural Festival underscores the importance of integrating economic, cultural, and social dimensions into community events.
Organisers believe that with continued support, the festival will remain a key driver of local development and cultural promotion in Sarawak.
