Tourist Couple Rescued After Being Trapped by High Tide in Santubong

KUCHING : A tourist couple faced a frightening ordeal this afternoon when they became stranded on a beach near the Damai Golf and Country Club in Santubong as high tide surged unexpectedly.

The incident occurred at around 1.53pm, prompting an urgent call to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba). A team from the Petra Jaya fire station was immediately dispatched to the scene.

According to a statement by the department, the couple, consisting of an Italian husband and his Thai wife, found themselves trapped as the rising tide surrounded the beach area. Fortunately, staff from the Damai Golf and Country Club arrived promptly and managed to rescue the couple before Bomba personnel reached the location.

“The Italian husband and his Thai wife were trapped due to high tide. They were rescued by staff from the Damai Golf and Country Club before Bomba personnel arrived,” the statement read.

Upon arrival, the Bomba team conducted a thorough assessment of the situation, gathering information and ensuring that no further hazards were present. The operation concluded safely at 2.53pm, with no injuries reported.

Authorities have reminded the public, especially tourists and beachgoers, to remain vigilant during high tide and to take necessary precautions when venturing near coastal areas. Quick action by the Damai Golf and Country Club staff was credited with preventing a potential tragedy.

This incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sea and the importance of local preparedness in ensuring visitor safety.
