JULAU – A collaborative initiative between the Sarawak Agriculture Department and the Malaysian Pepper Board (MPB) has brought new opportunities to pepper growers in Ulu Sengaih, Julau.

Seventy farmers took part in a two-day Pepper Crop Technology Dissemination Course last week, aimed at strengthening their knowledge of modern agricultural practices and digital tools for crop management.

The programme, held at Rumah Limai and coordinated by the Sungai Paoh Agricultural Training Centre (PLP), focused on practical, hands-on training.

Farmers were guided through demonstrations on crop care, fertilisation methods, safe pesticide use, and disease identification using the Dr Lada mobile application.

The app allows growers to detect crop diseases more quickly and accurately, helping them respond before problems escalate.

The training was conducted by supervisors from the MPB Bintangor Branch, led by Branch Head Victor Kano anak Changgai.

His team provided direct guidance in the field, ensuring participants could apply the techniques immediately to their own farms.

Pepper farming remains one of Sarawak’s most important agricultural sectors, with the state recognised as Malaysia’s leading producer.

However, growers face challenges such as disease outbreaks, fluctuating market prices, and the need to adopt sustainable practices.

The course was designed to address these issues by equipping farmers with the latest knowledge and tools to improve productivity and resilience.

Officials highlighted that the collaboration between the Agriculture Department and MPB reflects the government’s wider commitment to modernising agriculture.

By introducing digital applications and updated crop management techniques, the agencies aim to empower smallholders to compete in both domestic and international markets.

Participants expressed appreciation for the training, noting that the practical demonstrations and digital tools provided them with new confidence in managing their crops.

Many farmers said they were eager to apply the techniques to improve yields and reduce losses caused by pests and diseases.

The Ministry of Plantations and Commodities (KPK) has also emphasised the importance of such programmes in supporting Malaysia’s agricultural transformation agenda.

By integrating technology into traditional farming, the ministry hopes to boost efficiency, ensure food security, and strengthen rural economies.

The Ulu Sengaih initiative is expected to serve as a model for similar programmes across Sarawak, ensuring that pepper growers in other districts can benefit from the same level of support.

With pepper continuing to be a vital export commodity, the training marks a step forward in safeguarding the industry’s future while empowering local communities.
