SIBU – The Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari, has outlined an ambitious vision for the state, describing his goal to transform it into the “Bavaria of Malaysia”.
Speaking at the 2026 Sarawak Day Assembly in Sibu, he emphasised that this aspiration is rooted in building a sustainable economy driven by innovation, high-skilled human capital, and advanced technology.
The choice of Sibu as the host city for this year’s celebrations was described as deeply symbolic. Beyond its reputation as a hub for trade and entrepreneurship, Sibu is recognised as the birthplace of patriotic spirit, inspired by the sacrifices of historical figures such as the late Rosli Dhoby.
The Premier urged the current generation to draw inspiration from this legacy of courage, using it to fuel the ongoing transformation of Sarawak into a regional economic powerhouse.
Sarawak Day, observed on 22 July, marks the anniversary of the handover of administrative power to the people of Sarawak in 1963. However, the premier noted that the occasion has evolved into a symbol of confidence.
It represents the people’s determination to shape their own future based on internal strength and strategic planning, rather than relying solely on historical narratives.
