BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN – Economic ties between Sarawak and Brunei Darussalam have demonstrated significant strength, with bilateral trade reaching a substantial RM3.39 billion in 2024. This robust figure underscores deepening regional integration and sustained investor confidence in Sarawak’s economic landscape.

The data was highlighted by Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Sarawak’s Deputy Premier, during a ceremony for the Rimbunan Kaseh Sundar Project in Lawas. The event was hosted at the Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office in Brunei Darussalam (STATOB), a key venue for fostering cross-border commercial relationships.

He elaborated that this thriving trade volume with Brunei is a key component of Sarawak’s broader external trade, which he stated totalled RM198.7 billion for the same period. The consistent growth in exchanges between the two neighbours, he noted, reinforces Sarawak’s position as a strategic and popular destination for international investment.

The Deputy Premier, who also serves as the Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment, pointed to the complementary strengths of both regions. He described Brunei as possessing a robust business ecosystem and stable financial policies, making it a strategic gateway to larger international markets.

In contrast, he said Sarawak offers abundant natural resources, a skilled workforce, and notable political stability. This combination, he argued, creates a powerful synergy capable of driving greater economic growth for both parties through collaborative efforts.

Beyond existing trade, officials see considerable potential for future cooperation in emerging sectors. Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan specifically emphasised the vast opportunities in green energy, aligning with shared global commitments to sustainability and renewable power generation.

He stressed that the collaboration between Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam should be actively expanded into new, high-value economic fields with promising future prospects. This forward-looking approach aims to build on the existing solid foundation of commercial exchange.

The ceremony also served as the platform for a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signing between LCDA Agri Business Sdn. Bhd. and Sahamada Corporation Sdn. Bhd.. The agreement was witnessed by the Deputy Premier alongside Brunei’s Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism, Dato Seri Setia Dr. Abdul Manaf Metussin.

The event was attended by a high-level delegation, including the Malaysian High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam, Datuk Mohd Aini Atan, and other senior officials from business and government entities. The gathering underscored the political importance both sides attach to strengthening economic partnerships.

This sustained trade performance reflects successful diplomatic and commercial outreach efforts. It indicates a mature and evolving economic relationship that is expected to continue diversifying into new and innovative areas in the coming years.
