According to Sarawak State Customs Director, Norizan Yahya, the first case took place on April 24 when a team from the Miri Narcotics Branch, assisted by Drug Detection Dogs (ADDs), conducted a routine inspection at a courier service company located in Eastwood Valley Industrial Park, Phase 3, Jalan Miri By Pass.

“At around 9.30 am, our Drug Detection Dog detected a suspicious box of packages. A detailed inspection revealed two packets of tea, but hidden inside was 2,040 grams of Methamphetamine valued at RM65,280,” he said in a statement today.

The package was addressed to an abandoned and dilapidated house, believed to be a tactic to avoid detection by authorities.

In a separate operation at the same location, another suspicious box was detected by the ADD team. A thorough check found two more packets of tea mixed with food products. Inside, officers discovered another 2,040 grams of Methamphetamine, also valued at RM65,280.

“All dangerous drugs seized are being investigated under Section 30(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,” Norizan added.

The smugglers’ method was to ship the drugs via air courier from Peninsular Malaysia to Sarawak, using empty or uninhabited houses as the delivery addresses to avoid getting caught.

Customs warned that they will continue to strengthen surveillance at all entry points and courier hubs to prevent Sarawak from being used as a transit point for drug trafficking.

Members of the public are urged to cooperate by reporting any suspicious packages or activities related to courier services to the Customs Department.
