Sarawak Open International Dragon & Lion Dance Cup 2025 Elevates Batu Kawa’s Global Cultural Status
BATU KAWA, 1 Nov — The Sarawak Open International Dragon and Lion Dance Cup 2025 (SOIDLDC2025) has positioned Batu Kawa firmly on the global cultural map, drawing participation from top teams and reaffirming the area’s growing potential as a tourism and lifestyle hub.
The event, officiated by Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Professor Dr. Sim Kui Hian, was held at the Ang Cheng Ho Quarry Multi-Purpose Hall, where he announced major development plans to transform Batu Kawa into a vibrant lifestyle and tourism destination.
Dr. Sim revealed that the former quarry area — which hosted the championship — will be redeveloped into a 70-acre integrated destination featuring commercial zones, recreational spaces, and a large water-themed attraction. He said this development would further strengthen Batu Kawa’s role as a centre for community, culture, and tourism activities.
“By 2030, we will see a major water theme park, a shopping complex, and modern facilities surrounding this very venue. Batu Kawa will continue to evolve as one of Sarawak’s key destinations,” he said.
The Deputy Premier described the international cultural sports event as a reflection of Sarawak’s rich heritage and global connectivity, noting that such competitions showcase Malaysia’s multicultural strength. He added that the event not only celebrates traditional artistry but also supports local economic growth through tourism, hospitality, and small businesses.
“This is more than a cultural competition — it is a platform that unites communities, promotes healthy cultural exchange, and displays our identity to the world,” Dr. Sim said, praising the organisers and participants for their dedication.
He also thanked the Dragon and Lion Dance Federation of Malaysia, judges, and international teams for their contribution, saying their presence enhances Sarawak’s reputation as a capable host for international-scale events.
Among the attendees were Padawan Municipal Council Chairman Tan Kai, Federation Secretary General Datuk Yong Kheng Chien, SOIDLDC2025 Organising Chairman and CMAA President Chester Lim, and Competition Chairman and CMAA Advisor Pemanca Tan Kun Gee.
The event attracted both local and international spectators, with dazzling performances that blended tradition, rhythm, and acrobatics — a testament to the enduring appeal of dragon and lion dance culture in modern Malaysia.
