BINTULU – Sarawak is taking a forward-looking approach to energy development by expressing strong interest in exploring hydrogen-based fusion energy — a potential next-generation power source that could surpass nuclear energy in safety, sustainability, and efficiency.

Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, said the state is closely observing developments in fusion technology, particularly those leveraging hydrogen molecule reactions to generate clean energy.

Speaking at the Groundbreaking Ceremony of the OCI Tokuyama Semiconductor Material (OTSM) Semiconductor-Grade Polysilicon Plant at Samalaju Industrial Park on Wednesday, he shared insights from discussions with energy industry leaders.

“Malaysia, especially Peninsular Malaysia, is currently experiencing an energy shortage. While some are considering nuclear energy, we are examining hydrogen-based fusion — a cleaner and possibly more advanced alternative,” he said.

He explained that this technology is being developed using sophisticated equipment, with artificial intelligence (AI) playing an integral role in the production process. The Premier stressed that Sarawak is not limiting itself to hydro and solar power, but is also actively studying cutting-edge technologies like fusion energy.

“AI has now become a valuable asset in the energy and semiconductor sectors. The market demand is growing, and Sarawak aims to be at the forefront,” he noted.

Dr. Abang Zohari also expressed optimism that the OCI-Tokuyama partnership would elevate Sarawak’s global presence. “With this plant, we may be the first outside of Korea and Japan to possess such advanced capabilities,” he added.

This statement marks a significant step in positioning Sarawak as a serious player in the global energy transition, aligning its ambitions with sustainable innovation and high-tech development.
