Tun Pehin Sri Opens Sarawak Fatwa Seminar, Urges Stronger Islamic Guidance

SIBU – His Excellency the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr. Haji Wan Junaidi bin Tuanku Jaafar, together with Her Excellency Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah binti Mohd Sanusi, officiated the Sarawak-Level Fatwa Seminar held at the Islamic Complex Hall in Sibu this morning.

In his opening address, Tun Pehin Sri Wan Junaidi highlighted the vital role of the fatwa institution as the main pillar in guiding Muslims towards a progressive, disciplined, and syariah-compliant way of life.

He emphasised that fatwas serve a much broader purpose than merely providing legal rulings. Instead, they function as a bridge that links syariah principles with the realities of modern life, especially within Sarawak’s diverse social and cultural landscape.

Tun Pehin Sri reaffirmed the Sarawak government’s full commitment to strengthening the fatwa institution, ensuring that every decision issued remains valid, credible, and in line with current societal challenges.

He further noted that authoritative fatwas are essential in protecting the Muslim faith, particularly in today’s digital era where ideological confusion and misinformation can easily spread online.

“Fatwas must be understood as more than just legal rulings — they are life guides that encompass spiritual, social, economic, and humanitarian aspects, reflecting Islam as Ad-Deen, a complete and balanced system of life,” he said.

Addressing this year’s seminar theme, “Authoritative Fatwas, Sustainable Ummah,” Tun Pehin Sri stressed that the strength of the fatwa institution depends on the scholarly credibility of muftis, sound istinbat (legal deduction) methods, and the inclusion of experts from various professional backgrounds.

He also proposed that all issued fatwas be disseminated clearly, effectively, and, where necessary, be gazetted to ensure their full legal effect under state law.

Tun Pehin Sri concluded his speech by expressing confidence that Sarawak’s fatwa institution will continue to grow as a trusted authority — promoting unity, guiding Muslim society, and contributing to the welfare of the ummah not only in Sarawak but across Malaysia and beyond. – TYT Sarawak
