KUCHING – The Sarawak State Governor, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi bin Tuanku Jaafar, and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah binti Mohd Sanusi, welcomed the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching, Mr Xing Weiping, during a courtesy call at the State Astana in Petra Jaya on 13 April.
The meeting, held in the morning, marked Mr Xing’s formal introduction as the new Consul General in Kuching.
He was accompanied by senior officials from the Consulate General, including Vice Consul General Ms Chong Changhong, First Secretary Mr Yu Xing, Second Secretary Mrs Zeng Haoyao, and Third Secretary Mrs Zhang Wan.
Also present was Dato Fenny Nuli, Director of the Sarawak Regional Office under Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Discussions during the visit centred on strengthening bilateral ties between Sarawak and China, with emphasis on strategic sectors such as renewable energy, artificial intelligence, the digital economy, and sustainable agriculture.
Particular attention was given to Sarawak’s ambition to become Malaysia’s leading rice producer, a goal that aligns with broader food security initiatives.
Mr Xing praised Sarawak’s rapid development and highlighted the state’s political stability and harmonious multicultural society. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Sarawak’s aspiration of achieving developed state status by 2030, noting that Beijing views Sarawak as an important partner in regional growth.
Tun Pehin Sri Wan Junaidi reflected on his past experiences at the federal level, recalling official visits to China since the 1990s that showcased the country’s transformation into a global economic powerhouse.
He also touched on the long-standing diplomatic and trade relations between Malaysia and China, which date back to the administration of the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, Malaysia’s second prime minister.
The governor and his wife expressed appreciation for the visit, underscoring the importance of continued collaboration between Malaysia and China. They emphasised that strong diplomatic relations would bring mutual benefits, particularly in areas of economic cooperation, cultural exchange, and technological advancement.
This courtesy call further demonstrates the enduring partnership between Sarawak and China, reinforcing both sides’ commitment to deepening cooperation across multiple sectors. The meeting also reflects the broader Malaysia-China relationship, which continues to evolve in line with regional development priorities and global economic trends.
