Sarawak Gymkhana Racing Promotes Safe, Legal Motorcycle Competition

KUCHING – The 2025 Sarawak Gymkhana Motorcycle Racing programme has been hailed as a successful initiative to channel illegal street racing into a safe, regulated environment.

Organised under the supervision of the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC), the event provided a structured platform for riders to demonstrate skill and discipline while adhering to official racing standards.

Acting Chief Executive Officer of SSC, Khairul Nizam Morshidi, said the inaugural competition showcased disciplined and technically proficient riders who complied with safety rules.

He emphasised that the programme not only offered a legal avenue for racing but also encouraged responsibility among motorcyclists.

“I really hope that the Sarawak Gymkhana Motorcycle Racing Programme can be continued and made an official annual event at the state level,” he said during the closing ceremony.

He added that the event could evolve into a talent search platform at national and international levels, producing more professional Gymkhana athletes from Sarawak.

Khairul also highlighted the educational value of the programme, noting that it instils safety awareness, discipline, and responsibility among participants.

This aligns with broader efforts to reduce illegal racing activities by providing young riders with legitimate opportunities to compete.

The competition attracted 20 participants across three categories: motorcycles above 601cc, motorcycles between 250cc and 500cc, and motorcycles below 186cc.

  • In the 601cc and above category, Hadi Charlie emerged champion, followed by Ze’ Haazwil in second place and Felix Anthony Taguk in third.
  • In the 250cc–500cc category, Muhammad Irfan secured first place, with Ze’ Haazwil again taking second and Hasrul Rajona finishing third.
  • In the 186cc and below category, Ahmad Harith claimed victory, while Wan Nadzmi and Mohamad Khalid took second and third respectively.

The event drew support from key figures including Mohd Mua’zam Shah Abdul Mutalib, Recreation Branch Officer of the National Youth and Sports Department, Bronnie Marshall, President of the Sarawak Motorsport Association, and Nadzrul Idzlan Mohd Nor, Director of the Sarawak State Youth and Sports Department.

Observers noted that the Gymkhana format, which tests riders’ agility and control through obstacle-based courses, is gaining popularity worldwide as a safer alternative to street racing.

By adopting this model, Sarawak is positioning itself as a pioneer in promoting responsible motorsport culture.

The success of the inaugural programme has raised hopes that Gymkhana racing will become a permanent fixture in Sarawak’s sporting calendar, offering young riders a pathway to professional competition while reinforcing the importance of safety and discipline.
