Sarawak Libraries Focus on Innovation at Transformation Workshop 2026

KUCHING – Efforts to modernise and strengthen library services across Sarawak took centre stage at the Library Service Transformation Workshop held in conjunction with the Premier Public Library Awards Sarawak and Librarian Day 2026.

The workshop, organised by Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, was held on 8 June at the Sheraton Hotel in Kuching and gathered representatives from local authority libraries, Digital Community Centres (DCC), Kuching North City Hall (DBKU), as well as rural libraries operating under the National Library of Malaysia (PNM).

The programme formed part of wider initiatives aimed at enhancing public library services and ensuring they remain responsive to changing technological developments and evolving community expectations.

Across Malaysia and internationally, libraries have increasingly expanded their role beyond traditional book-lending services, embracing digital resources, community engagement programmes and lifelong learning opportunities.

Opening the event, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Services) of Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Hajah Salina binti Haji Zawawi, highlighted the growing need for libraries to adapt to rapid technological advancements while continuing to meet the diverse needs of communities.

She stressed the importance of transforming library services to ensure institutions remain relevant and capable of delivering meaningful benefits to the public in an increasingly digital environment.

A key highlight of the workshop was a presentation titled “Library Transformation Workshop” delivered by YBhg. Datin Paduka Mastura Haji Muhamad, director of the Selangor Public Library Corporation (PPAS).

During the session, participants were introduced to various approaches aimed at modernising library operations and services.

The presentation explored innovative strategies, successful implementation models and practical experiences that have contributed to strengthening the role of libraries as centres of knowledge, learning and community development.

The workshop also provided a platform for library professionals to discuss challenges and opportunities facing the sector.
