Sarawak Performing Arts Centre Project Progresses Ahead of Schedule

KUCHING – The transformation of the former Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) building into the state’s first dedicated Performing Arts Centre has reached 29 per cent completion, with progress reported to be slightly ahead of schedule.

Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah confirmed that the RM247 million project is advancing smoothly and remains on track for its targeted completion in 2027. He noted that construction works are currently one to two per cent ahead of the original timeline.

The redevelopment involves extensive refurbishment of the old DUN building, alongside the inclusion of additional facilities such as the adjacent Lapau structure.

Once completed, the centre will house a modern performing arts venue with seating for approximately 600 people. It is envisioned as a premier stage for both state-level and international cultural events.

Speaking after a site inspection, Abdul Karim expressed optimism about the project’s role in boosting Sarawak’s creative industry and tourism sector.

“Alhamdulillah, we have been informed by the Public Works Department (JKR) and the developer that the project is on schedule and even ahead by about one to two percent,” he said.

The initiative is part of Sarawak’s broader strategy to strengthen arts and culture-based tourism. Officials have highlighted that the Performing Arts Centre will not only preserve the heritage value of the historic building but also revitalise the surrounding area as a high-impact attraction.

The project is expected to serve as a catalyst for local economic activity, drawing visitors while providing opportunities for creative practitioners to showcase their talents on a professional platform.

Abdul Karim emphasised that the provision of modern facilities would invigorate the arts scene and contribute to Sarawak’s reputation as a cultural hub.

The centre is also aligned with Sarawak’s Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which places emphasis on diversifying tourism offerings and supporting creative industries.

Inspired by international venues such as London’s Royal Albert Hall, the Performing Arts Centre aims to deliver world-class standards while maintaining a strong local identity.

The redevelopment of the old DUN building, a landmark with more than 50 years of history, reflects the state’s commitment to balancing heritage preservation with modernisation.

Once operational, the centre is expected to become a cornerstone of Sarawak’s cultural infrastructure, enhancing both domestic and international tourism appeal.

The project has already attracted attention as a potential venue for major events, with hopes that it may play a role in hosting performances during the SEA Games 2027.

With steady progress and strong government backing, the Sarawak Performing Arts Centre is set to become a defining feature of the state’s cultural landscape.
