KUCHING — The annual Heroes’ Day celebration stands as a solemn tribute to Malaysia’s national heroes whose sacrifices have safeguarded the country’s sovereignty from the pre-independence period to the present day.
Speaking through a prepared speech read by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas during the 2025 Heroes’ Day celebration at Tugu Pahlawan, Taman Budaya, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg described the day as a poignant reminder of the courageous struggles that have shaped the nation’s history.
“Symbolically, Heroes’ Day is a moment to honour those who have selflessly defended the nation from threats, forging a path for the country’s growth and stability,” he said.
The Premier emphasised that the legacy of the national heroes must remain etched in public memory, acknowledging their role in building the nation’s civilisation. He noted that both pre- and post-independence sacrifices mark pivotal chapters in Malaysia’s journey.
He further urged the public to reflect on the peace, prosperity, and well-being currently enjoyed, attributing these blessings to the relentless efforts and pain endured by the nation’s past fighters.
“The blood and sweat of our warriors have yielded the harmony we now experience, and this peace is a gift that must be cherished,” he added.
Highlighting that the privileges Malaysians enjoy today did not come overnight, the Premier underscored the prolonged struggles that defined the journey towards freedom and security.
“These comforts were not won easily; they are the result of generations of perseverance and unwavering patriotism,” he stressed.
In closing, the Premier called on all Malaysians to continue honouring the sacrifices of the nation’s heroes and to keep them and their families in their thoughts and prayers.
