Sarawak Premier to Present Hydrogen Vision at Global Tokyo Conference

TOKYO — Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, has arrived in Tokyo, Japan for a two-day official visit to participate in the prestigious World Hydrogen Asia Conference 2025.

Touching down at Narita International Airport at 5.25 p.m. local time, Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari was accompanied by Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, and Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel.

They were welcomed at their hotel by Malaysia’s Ambassador to Japan, Dato’ Shahril Effendi Abd Ghany, along with Deputy Minister of Utility (Sarawak Energy and Petros), Dato Ibrahim Baki, and senior Sarawak officials.

On Thursday, the Sarawak Premier will take centre stage at the conference with a keynote address titled “Sarawak’s Hydrogen Vision: Catalysing Green Growth for ASEAN and Beyond.” The speech will outline the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap, detailing the state’s integrated strategy for renewable energy advancement, public-private partnerships, and investment opportunities in hydrogen technology.

From hydrogen mobility solutions to long-term export potential, Sarawak is positioning itself as a key regional hub in clean hydrogen energy. The Premier’s participation underscores the global recognition of Sarawak’s role in leading ASEAN’s transition to a sustainable energy future.

Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari will also contribute to a panel discussion on hydrogen policy alignment across the Asia-Pacific, alongside key figures including Shinichi Kihara from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry; Saudi Arabia’s Energy Ministry Advisor Osama Melebari; and Taiwanese academic Dr Tsaiying Lu.

In the afternoon, the Premier is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with executives from Japanese conglomerate Sumitomo to explore further investment and collaboration opportunities in the hydrogen sector.

The World Hydrogen Asia Conference 2025 brings together policymakers, industry leaders, and energy innovators to accelerate the growth of a clean hydrogen economy throughout the region.

Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari is expected to return to Sarawak on Friday.
