Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Abang Openg announced that the transformation will allow NREB to operate under a new service scheme that supports financial autonomy, enabling it to generate and manage its own revenue.

“This transformation empowers NREB with greater financial and administrative independence, allowing it to manage resources efficiently and explore new income-generating ventures,” he said.

He made the remarks during the NREB Service Excellence and Long Service Award Ceremony, where outstanding officers were recognised for their contributions to the organisation.

The Premier emphasised that NREB’s new corporate structure will position it as a strategic entity capable of leading sustainable innovation and developing environmentally friendly products.

He highlighted plans to turn research and development outcomes into commercial products, fostering economic growth through green initiatives.

“By converting environmental innovations into tangible products, we can turn sustainability into a viable economic opportunity,” he said.

Abang Zohari also reaffirmed the State Government’s intention to enhance Sarawak’s authority in waste management, following the federal approval for the state to take full control of solid waste disposal.

“In the next State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting, I will table a new law granting NREB the authority to manage waste effectively under state jurisdiction,” he said, noting that local councils will also be bound by the new legislation.

He added that these reforms aim to strengthen Sarawak’s ability to turn waste into valuable resources, promoting a circular economy and reducing environmental impact.
