Sarawak Premier Visits Serian Market to Promote E-Wallet Payments

Sarawak Premier Visits Serian Market to Promote E-Wallet Payments

Serian, 18 Feb 2025 – Sarawak Premier, YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Johari bin Tun Abg Haji Openg, visited Serian Tourist Market and Lepapa Hypermarket Serian to observe the use of S Pay Global, Sarawak’s e-wallet system, in daily shopping transactions.

Before the visit, he attended the launch of the Sarawak Basic Needs Contribution (SKAS) at the Serian Convention Centre. During his speech, he explained that the SKAS program aims to help low-income (B40) families cope with rising living costs.

“This program is designed to help people buy basic food items like rice, cooking oil, flour, tea, coffee, and vegetables. The government has allocated RM480 million, benefiting over 800,000 recipients,” said Abang Johari.

To ensure that the aid is used properly, the funds will be given through S Pay Global instead of cash. The government has already registered 61% of the eligible recipients and is working with supermarkets and retailers across Sarawak to make the system more accessible.

Key Leaders Attending the Event

Several government leaders were also present, including:

  • YB Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn – Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development
  • YB Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas – Deputy Premier of Sarawak
  • YB Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian – Deputy Premier of Sarawak
  • YB Tan Sri Datuk Amar Awang Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar – Speaker of the Sarawak State Assembly
  • YB Datuk Amar Abu Bakar bin Marzuki – Secretary to the Sarawak State Government

This initiative reflects the Sarawak government’s commitment to digital payments and support for low-income families, ensuring that financial aid reaches those who need it most.
