Sarawak Urges Review of Age Limit and Quota for Disabled Athletes

KUCHING – Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, Sarawak Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, has urged national sports authorities to review the age limit and quota system for athletes with disabilities, calling for policies that reflect the unique circumstances faced by these competitors.

Her call followed decisions by the National Sports Council of Malaysia (MSN) earlier this year to lower the age limit for disabled athletes from 45 to 40. The council also revised the quota requirement, setting a minimum of four athletes from three states instead of two.

Fatimah acknowledged the council’s support for disabled sports but said the new age restriction risks disadvantaging athletes who reach peak performance later in their careers. She said athletes with disabilities often develop their competitive abilities at different stages of life compared with able-bodied athletes.

She stressed many disabled athletes discover their sporting potential later, which makes rigid age limits unsuitable. According to her, administrative rules should not deny them the chance to compete when they still perform at a high level.

Sarawak has played a strong role in promoting sports among individuals with disabilities. Athletes from the state regularly compete in national and international competitions.

The state is also preparing to host the Special Olympics National Games in Bintulu this April. The event will feature athletes from different categories, including those with visual impairments and intellectual disabilities.

Fatimah said inclusive sports policies strengthen communities and empower people with disabilities. She added Sarawak remains committed to supporting OKU athletes and expanding opportunities for them to participate and succeed.

The issue was discussed during a media briefing attended by Mordi Bimol, who highlighted the need for stronger cooperation between ministries, sporting bodies, and community organisations. He also supported calls for more flexible age and quota arrangements to ensure fair participation.

Others present included Mohammad Razi Sitam, along with senior officials from the state’s community development and sports departments.

The discussion reflected Sarawak’s push to protect opportunities for athletes with disabilities while ensuring sports policies remain fair and inclusive.
