Sarawak Rewards Deaf Athletes with Cash Incentives

Sarawak Rewards Deaf Athletes with Cash Incentives

KUCHING: SOPMA 2025 has become more than just a sporting event, as the Sarawak Government stepped forward with a strong message of inclusion and national unity by allocating RM399,000 in financial incentives to medal winners from across Malaysia. The move places the Malaysian Deaf Sports Games firmly in the spotlight as a platform that recognises effort, discipline, and achievement among deaf athletes nationwide.

Sarawak Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, said the incentive reflects the state government’s appreciation for the athletes’ commitment and sacrifices in preparing for SOPMA 2025. She stressed that the allocation is not limited to Sarawak athletes alone, but extends to medal winners from 14 other states, highlighting Sarawak’s inclusive approach to sports development.

According to Fatimah, the approval of the allocation by Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg demonstrates the state’s long-term commitment to empowering persons with disabilities, particularly within the deaf community. She noted that SOPMA plays a vital role in uncovering talent and building confidence among deaf athletes, many of whom go on to represent Malaysia at higher levels of competition.

Speaking after the Incentive Presentation Ceremony for the 22nd SOPMA held in Sarawak, Fatimah said the incentives are meant to serve as motivation for athletes to continue striving for excellence. She expressed hope that SOPMA 2025 would act as a stepping stone towards success at national championships, ASEAN-level meets, Asia-Pacific tournaments, and international events such as the Deaflympics.

Also present at the ceremony was the president of Persatuan Sukan Orang Pekak Malaysia, Ong Shin Ruenn, who acknowledged Sarawak’s leadership in recognising deaf athletes on a national scale. He said such support sends a clear signal that SOPMA is an important part of Malaysia’s sporting ecosystem, not a side event.

From the total allocation, RM60,000 was awarded to 22 Sarawak deaf athletes who secured medals at SOPMA 2025. All medal winners, regardless of state, received incentives at the same rate. Gold medalists were awarded RM5,000, silver medalists RM2,000, and bronze medalists RM1,000. Fatimah said equal incentives reflect fairness and reinforce respect for every athlete’s effort.

At SOPMA, which took place in October last year, Sabah emerged as overall champion with 17 gold medals, 13 silver medals, and eight bronze medals. Sarawak finished second overall, followed by the Federal Territories in third place.

As SOPMA 2025 continues to gain recognition, Sarawak’s support sets a strong example of how inclusive sports can be strengthened through consistent policy, proper recognition, and respect for athletes who compete with determination and pride.
