Sarawak Invests RM20M in Advanced Cancer Care, First in Borneo

KUCHING – Sarawak has set a new milestone in healthcare with the launch of two advanced cancer treatment and diagnostic systems at the Borneo Medical Centre (BMC), representing a RM20 million investment in cutting-edge medical technology.

The newly introduced Halcyon Radiotherapy System and Gallium-68 Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen (PSMA) PET/CT Scan are the first of their kind on Borneo Island.

Their arrival is expected to significantly improve access to world-class cancer care for patients in Sarawak and the wider region.

The facilities were officially unveiled on Monday, with Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian delivering a speech on behalf of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Abdul Rahman Johari Tun Openg.

The Premier described the investment as a turning point for Sarawak’s healthcare sector, reducing the need for patients to travel to Kuala Lumpur or abroad for specialised treatment.

“It is encouraging to see Borneo Medical Centre, a homegrown private medical group, investing RM20 million in cutting-edge technology to serve the needs of Sarawakians.

This reduces the need for patients to travel to Kuala Lumpur or overseas for such treatments,” the Premier’s message stated.

The Halcyon Radiotherapy System, developed by Varian, is recognised globally for its precision and efficiency.

It delivers faster and more comfortable treatment sessions while minimising radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissues. This advancement is expected to improve patient safety and treatment outcomes.

Alongside it, the Gallium-68 PSMA PET/CT Scan provides highly accurate imaging, particularly for prostate cancer detection.

Medical experts note that early and precise diagnosis through this technology can significantly enhance survival rates and guide more effective treatment plans.

Healthcare analysts have pointed out that the introduction of these systems not only strengthens Sarawak’s medical infrastructure but also positions the state as a potential hub for medical tourism.

With modern facilities, skilled professionals, and a natural healing environment, Sarawak is increasingly seen as an attractive destination for patients from across Borneo and neighbouring countries.

The Premier emphasised that the initiative aligns with Sarawak’s broader vision of becoming a regional centre of healthcare excellence.

“By integrating technology and innovation, we are not only improving medical outcomes but also contributing to Sarawak’s position as a regional hub for healthcare excellence,” he said.

BMC’s investment underscores its role as a leading private healthcare provider in the state. The centre has been steadily expanding its services, and this latest development supports Sarawak’s long-term goal of achieving self-reliance in healthcare while ensuring high-quality access for its population.

Observers note that this move complements the federal government’s plans to accelerate the development of the Sarawak Cancer Centre, which is expected to provide comprehensive cancer care in the coming years.

Together, these initiatives reflect a growing commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery in East Malaysia.

With the launch of these advanced systems, Sarawak has set a new benchmark in cancer care for Borneo, reinforcing its reputation as a state that is embracing innovation to improve the well-being of its people.
