Sarawak Intensifies Road Safety Campaign Ahead of Christmas Festivities

SIBURAN – Road safety initiatives in Sarawak have been stepped up with the launch of the Road Safety Awareness Campaign Programme in conjunction with the 2025 Christmas season, held at the Serian Divisional Level on Thursday.

Tebedu State Assemblyman John Ilus underscored that road safety is a shared responsibility, involving not only government agencies but also drivers, motorcyclists, pillion riders and pedestrians. He stressed that collective vigilance is crucial to reducing accidents during the festive period.

The campaign was jointly organised by the Serian Division Resident’s Office and the Sarawak Ministry of Transport, with support from the Siburan District Office, Serian Division Road Safety Committee, Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department, and private sector partners.

John Ilus expressed hope that the programme would encourage the public to adopt safer driving habits and heighten awareness of traffic risks, particularly during the busy holiday season.

“Road safety is the responsibility of all parties and not limited to one or two agencies alone,” he said.

As part of the campaign’s highlights, the first 50 visitors received free helmets donated by Tay Motors, symbolising private sector support for community safety.

The gesture was welcomed as a practical step to promote protective gear usage among motorcyclists.

Organisers emphasised that the campaign aims to instil a long-term culture of safe driving within the community.

Beyond festive awareness, the initiative is intended to serve as a continuous platform for delivering road safety messages across Serian and surrounding districts.

The programme reflects Sarawak’s broader commitment to reducing road accidents and ensuring that festive celebrations are marked by safety and responsibility.

By combining government enforcement, community education and private sector contributions, the campaign seeks to create a safer environment for all road users.
