Sarawak Explores Siemens Energy Technology to Boost Hydrogen Production

Sarawak Explores Siemens Energy Technology to Boost Hydrogen Production

BERLIN – Sarawak is strengthening its position as a regional leader in green energy by exploring a strategic collaboration with Siemens Energy, one of the world’s leading energy companies headquartered in Berlin, Germany.

Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, said the official visit to Siemens Energy opened opportunities for Sarawak to leverage the company’s advanced technology, particularly in hydrogen production.

According to him, Siemens’ electrolyser technology is capable of producing 350 kilograms of hydrogen per hour, far surpassing Sarawak’s current production capacity of about 130 kilograms per day.

This presents a major opportunity for the state to expand its hydrogen output in line with its green economy aspirations.

“We have discussed with the company, and Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) together with the Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunications will study possible cooperation. This means that we can learn from them, and in the future we will see how this develops,” Abang Johari told UKAS and TVS during the visit.

The Premier was accompanied by Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, Deputy Minister of Utilities (Sarawak Energy and Petros) Dato Ibrahim Baki, and SEB Group CEO Datuk Sharbini Suhaili.

In addition to electrolyser technology, Sarawak is also looking into collaboration on Siemens’ gas turbine technology and the Siemens Innovation Centre, which provides advanced simulation facilities for research and development. The turbines, he noted, could be applied in Samalaju with potential upgrades over time.

“This official working visit is very meaningful as it opens new avenues of cooperation in green energy, in line with Sarawak’s aspiration to become a leader in the hydrogen industry in the region,” he said.

During the visit, the Sarawak delegation also met with Thorbjörn Fors, Senior Vice President of Siemens Energy Group and Managing Director of Asia Pacific, as well as Juha Pankakoski, Executive Vice President of Global Functions, Siemens Energy.
